FHU stays perfect with win over Patriots

HENDERSON — The No. 6 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions completed back-to-back matchups against top-25 teams and came out on the other side with a pair of wins after toppling the No. 12 University of the Cumberlands Patriots, 82-73.

With a combined 45 points in the first half, the offensive dogfight began for FHU (17-0, 2-0 MSC) hitting the long ball with Rachel Satterly and Carissa Curtis teaming up to score nine of FHU's first 13 points from 3-point land. For every FHU basket, there was a Cumberlands answer with the Patriots holding a 22-19 lead moving into the final minute of the first quarter. Elli Chumley scored a layup before Lilly Kee's free throws put the Lady Lions on top by one point, 23-22, at the end of the first frame.

The visiting Patriots (15-3, 0-2 MSC) had a set of big 3-pointers of their own in the early part of the second quarter, eventually taking a three-point lead. Alaina Stiles then knotted the game with a triple before Jenna Satterly's jumper in the final minute gave the Lady Lions a 39-35 halftime cushion.

Kee opened the second half with back-to-back layups before J. Satterly's trey gave either team their largest lead at the time with a nine-point edge. The Patriots pulled within two points, but a Kee jumper sparked an 8-0 run that ended with R. Satterly's 3-pointer giving FHU a 59-48 advantage. J. Satterly would again score a buzzer-beater to give FHU a 65-54 edge at the end of three quarters.

A seven-point run by the Patriots narrowed the gap to make it a two-possession game until the Lady Lions went on a 10-2 run highlighted by 3-pointers from both Satterly sisters. Those same sisters would end the game at the charity stripe to seal the victory, 82-73.

The Lady Lions shot 52% from the floor in the victory while scoring 25 bench points to the Patriots' 14.

Four Lady Lions bucketed at least 15 points with Lilly Kee and Jenna Satterly leading the charge with 19 points each. Rachel Satterly was nipping at their heels with 16 points while Ally Weather finished with 15 points. Both Rachel Satterly and Jenna Satterly doled out six assists in the victory.
