Lady Lions fall short of Blue Raiders

HENDERSON — A low-scoring Mid-South Conference matchup ended in a 55-52 defeat for the No. 2 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions against the No. 13 Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders.

The Lady Lions (22-3, 7-3 MSC) lit the board first with a 3-pointer from Jenna Satterly before the guests began their scoring to take a two-point lead in the middle of the first quarter. Lilly Kee's jumper opened a seven-point run for FHU that ended with Brooklyn Crouch's free throws giving FHU a 12-7 edge. Ally Weathers would add a late layup, and the Blue Raiders hit two jumpers in the final two minutes to end the quarter with FHU leading 14-11.

While Freed-Hardeman was driving into the paint with jumpers from Kee and Crouch, Lindsey Wilson (21-4, 6-2 MSC) utilized back-to-back 3-pointers late to take a one-point lead. Rachel Satterly would score four points in the quarter while Weathers and Kee ended the half with four points to give FHU the lead back at the break, 28-25.

Neither team led by more than three points in the third quarter, with a majority of the frame flipping one-point leads. Kee and Weathers led FHU early while Crouch and J. Satterly bucketed the last four points of the quarter to advance to the final 10 minutes holding a 38-36 lead.

LWU started the quarter with two layups to take a lead the Lady Lions could never fully recover from. Layups from J. Satterly and Weathers would tie the game early, but for every basket FHU scored, the Blue Raiders would score two. An old-fashioned three-point play from J. Satterly pulled the Lady Lions within two points with 30 seconds left. FHU held the Blue Raiders to one free throw on the other end of the floor while Weathers' layup set the score at 53-52. Lindsey Wilson hit two free throws to make FHU need a 3-pointer to tie the game, but the last-second heave fell short to conclude the game with a 55-52 loss for FHU.

The Lady Lions had the better night from the floor, shooting 37% to the Blue Raiders' 32%, but LWU took advantage of 14 Lady Lion turnovers to score 15 points.

Jenna Satterly led FHU with 17 points while Ally Weathers ended a rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Lilly Kee tacked on 10 points with Rachel Satterly joining J. Satterly and Weathers to lead the way with two assists each.
