Starters lead the way in close victory

LEBANON, Tenn. — Four of the starters for the No. 2 Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions collected all 65 points for FHU Monday night. That was enough to eke past the (RV) Cumberland University Phoenix with a 65-57 victory.

Throughout the contest, the Lady Lions (23-1, 8-1 MSC) were never able to hold a substantial lead. Jenna Satterly's 3-pointer in the first quarter tied the game early to spark a run that ended with Rachel Satterly's layup putting FHU on top by six. By the buzzer, FHU's lead was 11-7.

Neither the Lady Lions nor the Phoenix (14-9, 0-7 MSC) found the hoop with great success in the second quarter with the teams combining for five field goals. Ally Weathers' free throws ended a low-scoring first half with a 21-15 FHU lead.

Cumberland found the bottom of the net with a triple on their first shot before Lilly Kee made the Lady Lions' first layup of the second half at 9:02. A 6-0 swing gave the hosts a lead, but J. Satterly and Kee drove into the paint to flip the lead back FHU's way before R. Satterly's 3-pointer made it a two possession game. Weathers tallied the final four points of the quarter to give the Lady Lions a 41-36 lead after three complete quarters.

FHU began the final quarter with seven unanswered points from the Satterly sisters with J. Satterly's layup at 6:46 giving the Lady Lions their largest lead at 50-39. The Lady Lions would not score a bucket from the floor the final 3:18 of the contest, but made nine free throws to ice the game and secure the 65-57 win.

Uncharacteristically cold from the floor, FHU shot 38% to CU's 32%. FHU scored 30 points in the paint while the Phoenix managed 24.

Jenna Satterly recorded at least 20 points in three of the last four games with a 22-point effort in the win. Lilly Kee followed with 18 points while Rachel Satterly added 13. Ally Weathers recorded a double-double in back-to-back games with a 12-point, 11-rebound game.
