Lady Lions drop league opener

COLUMBIA, Ky. — The Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions began the second half of their season with their first Mid-South Conference match. The Lindsey Wilson University Blue Raiders had the edge to win 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-15).

The first set was one of runs for each side. Freed-Hardeman (8-9, 0-1 MSC) answered a 4-0 run from the Blur Raiders with a five-point swing of their own to take a 9-7 lead. The Lady Lions forged ahead when Marija Cabadaj's kill gave FHU a 16-13 lead. Continuing with the momentum swings, Lindsey Wilson won six of the next seven rallies. LWU would later win three straight points to get the set victory 25-20.

Freed-Hardeman opened the second set on a roll with Marija Milic connecting for a kill and an ace before Allie Lowhorn's kill made it 6-1 in favor of FHU. The Lady Lions kept the Blue Raiders (11-10, 1-1 MSC) at arm's length most of the set, with another Cabadaj kill giving FHU a 19-17 lead. As was their boon in the first set, Lindsey Wilson scored six unanswered points to take the lead that gave them the momentum to win the second set 25-20.

Lindsey Wilson again used big runs in the final frame, opening the third with a 7-1 lead. They would later extend that to a 12-2 advantage before the Lady Lions began to battle back. Alyssa Austin landed a kill before Morgan Jackson joined with a kill. Becca Heineman's ace was followed by three kills from Olivia Saint. The late push was not quite enough as the Blue Raiders reached 25 to win the set and the match.

The Lady Lions again hit the ball well, getting 35 kills on 98 swings. The biggest statistical difference came form LWU having eight blocks to the Lady Lions' one.

Olivia Saint led the attack with nine kills while Teodora Dacic followed with six. Alex Howard led on the back row with 11 digs.
