Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - Derek Williford tossed a two-hitter three days after being named conference pitcher of the week to help lead the Freed-Hardeman Lions to a double-header split with Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College on Thursday evening at Carnes Field.
The Lions scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to win game one, 4-3, before dropping game two, 12-11.
Williford (2-1) allowed only five earned baserunners in his seven innings of work, but the Freed-Hardeman defense made five errors behind him that lead to two of the RedHawks' three runs. FHU trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning but got RBI singles from
Derek Bush and
Robert Prieto to take a 4-3 lead. Williford then retired the side in the seventh to get his second win in as many starts.
Freed-Hardeman held an 11-8 lead after four innings of game two, but this time it was the RedHawks' turn to come from behind. MMC tied the game in the sixth inning on a two-out, three-run home run by Jordan Hedges and took the lead in the seventh on a solo shot by Darin Hurt.
The Lions had taken control earlier with a six-run second inning that included a three-run home run by
Leamond Arthur. Arthur finished the game with two hits and four RBI.
Evan Mansell also homered in the first inning.
Hunter Newby (6-3) took the loss in game two, working in relief of
Gage Franklin. Franklin gave up eight runs in 2-1/3 innings.
The series concludes with a single nine-inning game at 2:00 PM on Friday with senior day activities scheduled after the game.
