Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions got in the win column after sweeping a double-header on Sunday afternoon, taking a 3-1 win over Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College and following with an 11-1 victory over Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University.
In game one,
Hunter Newby (1-0) went the distance with a three-hitter, allowing a lone run in the fifth and pitching around three FHU errors throughout the game.
The Lions did all their damage in the third, loading the bases with no one out on singles by
Joe Mike and
Robert Prieto and a walk drawn by
Tyler Wilson.
Kyle Dearing drove in Mike after reaching on a fielder's choice, and
Leamond Arthur followed with a two-run single.
Newby took care of the rest, retiring the last seven batters he faced to get the win in his first appearance of the year.
Charlie Overturf (1-0) followed Newby with a complete-game win in game two, allowing one unearned run in five innings, but had a lot more run support as the Lions run-ruled the Hornets.
The Hornets' only run came in the first, getting two of their four hits in the inning and scoring with two outs on an error by Prieto. FHU answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, blew the game open with a five-run fourth, and finished the game on
Jake Francis' RBI single with two outs in the fifth.
The Lions had by far their best offensive showing of the early season in game two, pounding out 15 hits.
Evan Mansell was a perfect 4-for-4 while Arthur went 3-for-4 with three doubles. Mansell, Arthur, Francis, Dearing and
Kirkland Wheeler each had two RBI in the win as well.
FHU finishes off the weekend series with a 3:00 PM single game against Harris-Stowe on Monday.
