Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - Visiting Indiana Southeast used a four-run first inning to take a lead it would not lose, defeating the Freed-Hardeman Lions, 12-8, on Friday afternoon at Carnes Field.
The Grenadiers chased Lion starter
Gage Franklin (0-1) early after the sophomore surrendered four runs on three hits in just one-third an inning of work. IUS then picked up another run in the top of the third on a solo home run by Zach Maupin to take a 5-0 lead.
The Lions got a run back in the third when
Kyle Day, who led off the inning with a single, came around to score on an error by IUS catcher Tyler Woolems. The Grenadiers' Frankie Plustoka answered with a home run to lead off the fourth, but
Leamond Arthur (1) did the same for FHU in the bottom of the inning and the Lions picked up another run when
Evan Mansell scored on a fielder's choice.
IUS and FHU both scored again in the fifth and sixth innings to enter the seventh with the Grenadiers leading 9-5. After
Justin Stout held the visitors scoreless in the top of the frame, the Lions came back with three runs to get within striking distance.
However, the Grenadiers added to their cushion with a run in the eighth and two in the ninth while Bo Daves allowed one Lion hit in the next two innings, striking out four to close the door.
The loss evens FHU's season record up at 3-3. The two teams finish their series tomorrow with a double-header beginning at noon.
