Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion baseball team hung in with the nation's top team but fell just a little short, losing both ends of a double-header to No. 1 Cumberland (Tenn.) University on Thursday, 4-0 and 2-1.
The Bulldogs' Aaron Wilkerson tossed a two-hit shutout in game one, striking out 11. CU got runs in the second and third to take a 2-0 lead, then doubled it in the fifth inning when it recorded four of its nine hits off Lion starter
Hunter Newby.
Newby scattered nine hits over five innings of work, striking out five and allowing four runs.
Kyle Parrish and
Amos Bingham combined for two innings of scoreless relief.
The Lions almost pulled it out in game two, getting quality pitching performances from
Charlie Overturf, Bingham and
Drew Suttles, but T.J. Murphy's two-out RBI double in the top of the seventh inning proved to be the difference.
FHU threatened in the bottom of the frame against Will Locante, getting runners on first and second with two down, but Locante fanned
Justin Mackey for one of his 12 strikeouts to end the game.
Kyle Day provided Freed-Hardeman's lone run with a solo home run in the third inning.
Joe Mike went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles.
The series concludes with a nine-inning game at 3:00 PM on Friday.
