Box Score MAYFIELD, Ky. - The Freed-Hardeman Lion baseball team led the way in the TranSouth Conference and Unaffiliated Group Awards announced on Tuesday, April 30, with seven all-conference selections and five all-group selections.
The Unaffiliated Group awards were given to players from the TranSouth and Gulf Coast Athletic Conferences, both of which are competing this week at Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College for a spot in the opening round of the NAIA National Baseball Championships.
Justin Mackey led the list of seven Lions who were voted to the all-conference team and five voted to the all-group team. Mackey, a senior, finished the regular season with a .402 batting average and 48 RBIs and had a 22-game hitting streak snapped in the final game of the season.
He was joined on the all-group team by junior 3B Ryan Huber (.375 AVG, .441 OBP, 34 RBIs), junior SS Kyle Dearing (.306 AVG, .454 OBP, 55 runs, 22 SB), junior LHP Dan Creighton (7-0, 2.23 ERA, 41 K) and junior RHP Chris Hatfield (6-2, 2.50 ERA, 60 K).
Senior 1B Joe Mike (.345 AVG, 41 RBIs) and junior reliever Drew Suttles (3-1, 3.13 ERA, 5 saves) also made the all-conference squad. Mike and Huber were also named to both the all-conference and all-group Gold Glove teams.
Freed-Hardeman also led the way in the conference in scholar-athletes with 15. Tyler Anderson, Joe Creasy, Kyle Dearing, Ryan Fares, Connor Kohlscheen, Jackson Lockhart, Mark Malone, Casey Overturf, Drew Suttles, Jake Todd, Eric Tompkins, Pete Trollinger, Zack White, Ryan Wood and Greg Young were among those who received the conference's academic honor. To be named a conference scholar-athlete, students must be a sophomore or above in academic classification and possess a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.
