Box Score HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman soccer teams are both in need of wins to stay in the hunt for a spot in the American Midwest Conference tournament as they travel to Lyon (Ark.) College for a pair of Wednesday afternoon matches.
WOMEN'S MATCH - 1:00 PM
SETTING THE STAGE
The Lady Lions (5-5-1, 2-4) are coming off two narrow losses in conference, losing by a goal to both Missouri Baptist and Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.). They need win over Lyon (6-5-1, 4-3-1) to get into better position to secure a spot in the postseason. The Scots are coming off an upset at the hands of Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) on Saturday.
LAST TIME THEY MET
Lyon dominated the run of play and took a 3-0 win over FHU in Henderson on Nov. 2, 2013. The Scots held a 26-3 advantage in shots during the contest.
WHAT TO WATCH
- Lyon has had a bit of a Jeckyl-and-Hyde season, with some surprising early results including blowout losses to Christian Brothers (Tenn.), Park (Mo.) and Missouri Baptist. However, the Scot defense has cracked down lately allowing just four goals in its last five matches.
- Lyon's Anna Waldman leads the conference in goals with 20. The forward from Mendocino, Calif., has scored 10 of those in her last three matches. Keeping a mark on her will be important for the Lady Lion back line.
- FHU, meanwhile, has had its problems scoring lately with only one goal in its last three matches - all conference losses. The Lady Lions will need to find ways to create more scoring opportunities.
MEN'S MATCH - 3:00 PM
SETTING THE STAGE
The Lions (6-4, 2-4) are coming off a 2-0 loss to Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) on Saturday despite out-shooting the Trojans, 18-8. A win on Saturday for FHU would go a long way in helping secure a spot in the conference tournament, but a talented Lyon (6-5-1, 4-3) squad stands in the way.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The Lions needed win over Lyon College to make it into the conference tournament, but only got a 1-1 tie on Nov. 2, 2013, in Henderson. FHU scored in the 21st minute to take the lead, but Abdullah Adam equalized the match in the 75th minute from distance.
WHAT TO WATCH
- The Scots have typically been tough at home, and notched a 2-1 win there over William Woods (Mo.) last month to give the Owls their only loss in conference. Lyon is coming off a pair of road wins at Williams Baptist (Ark.) and Benedictine-Springfield (Mo.) by a combined score of 9-3.
- While getting shots has not been a problem for the Lions lately, scoring goals has been. FHU has been shut out in four of its last five matches despite taking 42 shots in those losses. The Lions have been able to create opportunities, but need to find a way to finish.
- Lyon's Abdullah Adam leads the team and the conference in goals with 10. He has scored four of those in his last three matches, all in conference play.
