Box Score COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions snapped a five-match winless streak in dominating fashio, controlling the majority of the match in a 6-1 win over Stephens (Mo.) College on Thursday afternoon.
FHU out-shot the Stars for the match, 37-5, and took the first 23 shots of the second half before Stephens got two chances in the final minute of play.
Taylor Jenkins recorded the third hat trick of her career with all three of her goals coming in the second half (51', 63', 80'). Her first goal was unassisted as she shot across the box into the upper right corner. She later took a pass from Brett Kletke in the middle of the box and scored to the lower right corner, then finished off her hat trick by putting in a rebound of a Julianne Renner shot.
Renner put FHU ahead early in the sixth minutem taking a cross from Taylor Woods and hitting a shot that bounced off the hands of Stars keeper Amanda Chapman into the net. Woods made it 2-0 in the 29th minute, taking a nice pass from Brooke Nicholson in the middle of the box and beating Chapman to the lower right corner.
Stephens pulled within a goal late in the half as Kenzie Andrade got past her defender and hit a left-footed strike that went into the upper left corner.
FHU (6-7-1, 3-6), though, did not allow the Stars another good chance as the Lady Lions kept possession for nearly all of the second half.
NOTES AND NUMBERS: Normally a keeper, Claire Messina started in the field for FHU due to a shortage of players. She took a shot early in the match but missed wide...Renner scored her ninth and 10th goals of the season, making her the fourth player in program history to reach double-digits in goals in a season. She is tied for third all-time with Tara Jackson (2002)...Before Jenkins's unassisted goal in the 51st minute, Taylor Woods had either scored or assisted on FHU's last four goals...Jenkins's hat trick is her third and the 13th in program history. She is tied for the most hat tricks in a career with Whitney Newby and Leslie Tiensvold.
