Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - Continuing to show a flair for late-inning dramatics already this season, the Freed-Hardeman Lions got another extra-innings win on Monday afternoon at Carnes Field.
Cole Veazey singled home Lincoln Lakoff in the bottom of the 11th to give the Lions a 6-5 win over Goshen (Ind.) College. It was the second walk-off single in extra innings this year for FHU.
The Lions (5-2) fell behind early when Goshen scored three times in the top of the third off of starter Chris Hatfield, but FHU matched the Maple Leafs in the bottom of the inning on a two-run single by Robert Prieto and a double-steal by Prieto and Pete Trollinger which saw Trollinger swipe home plate.
Goshen retook the lead and chased Hatield in the fourth with two runs but again FHU came back to tie the game, this time with two runs in the fifth.
From that point forward, it became a pitchers' duel. The Freed-Hardeman bullpen trio of Ryan Smith, Brandon Guske and Nolan Huber combined to shut down the Maple Leafs from that point on while GC's Michael Walker did the same for his team.
FHU finally broke through in the 11th after Lakoff drew a leadoff walk. Garrett Ferguson sacrificed him to second on a bunt before Veazey's single drove him home for the game-winning run.
Huber (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing three hitless innings while fanning three.
The Lions travel to face No. 10 Cumberland (Tenn.) in a double-header on Tuesday beginning at noon.
