SETTING THE STAGE
The No. 1 Lady Lions (24-1, 19-0) enter today's game with a chance to break last year's record-setting win streak of 24 games. They'll have to do it against a Trojan (9-14, 9-10) team that pushed FHU to the limit in the first game between the two this season in Henderson. HLGU is in a battle for sixth place in conferene, currently sitting one game out of sixth.
LAST TIME THEY MET
FHU played without leading scorer Hayley Newby and definitely felt the effects, shooting 29.3 percent from the field and holding on late for a 68-63 win in Henderson on Jan. 3. Grace Alonso de Armino had 25 points and 22 rebounds but went 7-of-30 from the field. She and Paige Melville went a combined 9-for-45 in the game. The Trojans, meanwhile, shoy 48.0 percent from the floor but gave up 25 offensive rebounds to FHU.
INSIDE THE SERIES
FHU's 68-63 win in January extended its lead in the all-time series to 4-0.
RECORD-TYING WIN
Freed-Hardeman's forfeit win over Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) on Thursday was its 24th straight, tying the program record that was set last season for consecutive wins. FHU teams have won 20 or more consecutive games five times, with four of those coming in each of the last four seasons. Last year's team broke the record of 23 straight, set by the 2005-06 squad.
GOING FOR 800
FHU head coach Dale Neal enters today with 799 career college wins and goes for No. 800 today. He won 233 at York (Neb.) as the men's coach before coming to Freed-Hardeman in 1994.
NEWBY NAMED NAIA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hayley Newby was named the NAIA National Player of the Week on Tuesday following her 35-point performance against William Woods (Mo.) on Saturday. It was her second national award of her career as she also received it once last season. Newby's 35 points were a career high as were her 17 field goals made, which tied for second-most in program history.
NEARING 1000
Grace Alonso de Armino already surpassed 1000 career rebounds this season, and Hayley Newby is nearly there. She enters today's game with 962 career rebounds and looks to join her classmate - and former high school district opponent - as the sixth player in FHU history to reach four digits in rebounding.
STOLEN PROPERTY
Grace Alonso de Armino is known for her rebounding - she still leads the NAIA with 13.2 boards per game - but sometimes her defense gets overlooked. Lately, she has been just as disruptive on defense as she has been on the boards with 23 steals in her last four contests. She now ranks sixth in the NAIA in total steals (64) and 10th in steals per game (2.8).
PROFITABLE MARGINS
While the Lady Lions have had their shooting struggles this season, they've been able to overcome it by being fantastic in the margin categories - rebounding margin and turnover margin. FHU leads the NAIA in rebounding margin, averaging 14.3 more per game than opponents, and is second in turnover margin ay 7.8. Those two margins translate into extended possessions for FHU and quality possessions taken away from opponents.
SCOUTING THE TROJANS
As previously noted, Hannibal-LaGrange gave FHU a stiff challenge in their first meeting without Hayley Newby. The Trojans are a very good shooting team, ranking ninth in the nation at 44.5 percent from the floor and third from the free throw line at 73.9 percent. They are led by two-time All-American Ashley Hurd-Spencer, who averages 21.1 points per game, although FHU held her to 12 in their first meeting. They rely heavily on her along with Morgan Winkler (14.5 ppg) and Sarah Cline (12.9 ppg) for their offense. No other player averages more than 5.4 points per game.
