Coleman's shutout highlights Saturday sweep for Lions

Box Score

HENDERSON, Tenn. - Jack Coleman tossed a two-hit shutout, highlighting a double-header sweep of Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College on Saturday for the Freed-Hardeman Lions.

Coleman (3-0) was brilliant in the second game, stranding six runners and only allowing hits in the fourth and eighth innings. He walked three and struck out five in picking up his third win in as many starts.

The Lions (9-3) got two-RBI hits from Argenis Salazar and Zac Carter in the third inning as FHU took a 4-0 lead. Two more runs crossed in the fourth and gave Coleman more than enough to work with.

Salazar capped off the second game with a two-run home run in the sixth, his third of the season, and finished the game with five RBIs.

FHU ran into trouble early in game one when four errors in the top of the second inning led to four runs for the Wildcats (4-8). CSC added another in the third and held a 5-1 lead.

But the Lions bounced back with a five-run fourth as Houston Looser delivered a two-out, two-run double give Freed-Hardeman the lead.

Nolan Huber (2-0) went to work afterward, retiring nine of the next 11 batters to finish off the game as he went the distance in the seven-inning game.

FHU had eight hits in game one, led by Garrett Ferguson who went 2-for-3. Chase Young was 3-for-4 in game two while Looser, Salazar and Nathan Van Nortwick all had two hits.

NOTES AND NUMBERS: FHU only attempted two steals on the day. The Lions entered the day third in the NAIA in steal attempts per game…Salazar's two hits in the second game gives him six multi-hit games on the season. He's also driven in two or more runs five times…Looser has hit safely in all 12 games this year…Coleman's nine-inning shutout was FHU's first by one pitcher in at least 13 years, as complete records before 2002 are not available. Adam Blackburn and Amos Bingham combined on a nine-inning shutout on April 6, 2010.

UP NEXT: The Lions finish the weekend series with a single nine-inning game tomorrow at 1:00 PM. Brandon Guske (3-1, 3.97 ERA) is the scheduled pitcher.
