SETTING THE STAGE
FHU (15-4, 3-0 AMC) enters today's match-up with Blue Mountain College (12-7, 0-3 SSAC) coming off a sweep of Central Baptist (Ark.) College (17-4, 0-3 AMC) on Friday and Saturday.
Brandon Guske (4-2) worked eight full innings in the 10-0 Game 1 win on Friday, pitching a shutout on just seven hits, while striking out seven in his sixth start of the season. Garrett Ferguson and Houston Looser led the Lions at the plate as Looser went 2-for-4 on the day and contributed a homerun while Ferguson finished the day with a home run and two RBI's in the match-up. J.C. Daily followed close behind as he went 2-for-5 on the day with two stolen bases and three scored runs.
Chase Young led the Lions at the plate in the second game of the series on Saturday, going 3-for-4 on the day with two home runs and two RBI's while Zac Carter continued his hot streak with a 2-for-3 performance.
Beau Caviness picked up the win the match-up after providing two innings of relief for starting pitcher Nolan Huber, who worked four innings and allowed nine hits and struck out two. Caviness was solid in relief for the Lions as he allowed no hits and struck out one to hold off the Mustangs in the final two innings to pick up the 7-6 win.
Jack Coleman (2-1) picked up the win in the series finale after working eight full innings and giving up just eight hits while striking out four. Jordan Newby provided one inning of relief and struck out two as he shut the Mustangs down in the ninth inning to allow the Lions to cruise to an 11-5 victory in the nightcap.
LAST TIME THEY MET
The last time FHU faced Blue Mountain College was last season on February 21, 2015 as the Lions split a twinbill with the Toppers by dropping the opening game 6-5, but coming back with a 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
FHU looked to be in good shape in the opener after scoring twice in the first inning, but a two-out error in the top of the third led to three Blue Mountain runs. The Toppers tacked another run in the fourth to take a 4-2 lead before the Lions scored three times in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by a two-run home run by Jordan Woelfle (2).
The Toppers, though, tied the game with a run in the sixth and plated the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a two-out single by Justin Whitaker. J.C. Daily reached on a walk with two outs in FHU's final at-bat but was stranded at first.
In game two, the Lions did all their damage with two outs in the third inning. After FHU loaded the bases, Bobby Seda emptied them with a three-run triple that was followed by back-to-back doubles by Houston Looser and Pete Trollinger.
The five runs were more than enough for the tandem of J.C. Chapman and Jackson Lockhart. Chapman (2-1) allowed one run on seven hits in four innings of work while Lockhart tossed three scoreless innings of relief to pick up the save (2). The junior fanned a career-high seven batters.
Kyle Douglas (0-1) took the loss in game one in 2-1/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs in relief of Jared Humphry.
