PULASKI, Tenn. – The Lions baseball team (28-10, 15-2 AMC) took on the Martin Methodist Redhawks (22-14, 8-6 SSAC) in a double-header on Monday and split the series, winning game one 8-2, but falling 7-2 in game two.
Both game sort of mirrored each other, with the winning team having a big inning to get the game started.
In game one, the Lions dropped four runs in the top of the second inning, with runs scored by Will McCall, Christian Busby, Cody McSwain and James Dodd.
The Redhawks cut into the lead with two runs in the bottom of the third, but two runs in both the sixth and seventh innings sealed the game for the visitors.
Busby scored his second run of the game after a wild pitch brought him in from third base in the sixth inning. McSwain followed after being brought in by Zach Sanders on a sacrifice fly.
In the seventh inning, Sanders brought in his second run of the game after singling to left field, scoring Collin Baber, who was pinch running for Collin McPherson. The second run crossed when Dodd reached on a fielder's choice, plating McCall for the second time in the contest.
Tyson Campbell – who was named American Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon – started the game on the mound and went the full seven innings. He struck out nine batters and only surrendered two hits and one walk.
Game two went in the favor of the Redhawks, who also had a monster inning to get the game started.
In the bottom of the second, Martin Methodist scored six runs to jump out to an early lead.
The Lions scored two in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run home run from Busby.
The Redhawks would score one more in the bottom half of the inning, and completed the series sweep. Tyler Duskin, Drew Bailey, Seth Selby, Blane Harris, Henry Mosley and Collin Davis each saw time on the mound.
The Lions will be back in action at home on Tuesday in a single-game, AMC matchup with Lyon College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
