Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – The No. 9 Lions (4-7) dropped both games on Sunday, falling 3-2 in game one and 6-5 in game two to Loyola (7-5) to split the four-game road series.
Game two of the doubleheader was a thriller that started with the Wolf Pack leading the Lions 5-0 heading into the sixth inning.
With two outs in the sixth, Von Watson hit a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. He later came in to score on a wild throw that put Beau Simpson on first base.
Hunter Beecham kept his hot bat going with a single that advanced Simpson to third, and Dylan Lott brought them both in with a three-run home run to make it a one-run game.
In the top of the final inning, the Lions were able to tie the game when Riley Perks hit a pinch-hit, leadoff double. Dawson Massengale entered as a pinch runner and scored the tying run on a sacrifice squeeze bunt laid down by Dom Pisano.
The Wolf Pack got the final word, though, in the bottom of the seventh on a single that scored a runner from second to split the series for Loyola.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Wolf Pack jumped out to a 3-0 lead through two innings. After three straight scoreless frames, the Lions attempted the rally in the sixth inning, scoring two runs to get within one.
With the bases loaded and no outs, the Lions scored on back-to-back sacrifice flies hit by Watson and Simpson, scoring Pisano and Zach Sanders.
That would end up not being enough for the Lions, as the Wolf Pack was able to sit them down in order in the top of the seventh to put a halt to the rally.
Pisano reached base in all of his at-bats, going 3-for-3 in the first game of the doubleheader.
The Lions are scheduled to return home to face Thomas More on Friday and Saturday to open up Mid-South Conference play. They will play a single game on Friday starting at 5 p.m., with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 noon.
