Lions offense rolls to take final home series

Box Score

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Lions baseball team (20-19, 13-6 MSC) took games two and three, and the series, from Cumberland University (19-19, 6-9 MSC) on Saturday, winning game two 9-8 and taking game three 14-9.

Game two of the series was a back-and-forth affair, with the two teams trading blows throughout the contest.

The Lions scored first in the bottom of the first inning when DeJhard Kimbrough crossed the plate on a fielder's choice. A run from the Phoenix in the third inning tied things up, but Josh Sears was able to break it with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning.

Cumberland added two runs to take the lead in the fourth inning, but the Lions tied it up in the bottom half on an error and then took the lead in the fifth when Kimbrough scored his third run on a sacrifice fly by Dom Pisano.

The Phoenix scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to take an 8-3 lead, but a two-run single by Beau Simpson scored two runs, and a three-run bomb by Sears in the bottom of the eighth gave the Lions the 9-8 lead, which would win them the contest.

Jack Christian earned the win after three and one-third innings of relief, striking out four batters.

It was all Lions in game three of the series when they scored three runs in the first inning on a dropped fly ball and 10 runs in the third inning, highlighted by home runs from Brady Harris, Von Watson and Sears.

The Phoenix battled back late in the game, going on a scoring run of 9-1, but the Lions bullpen was able to hang on late to earn the 14-9 win.

The Lions will take on No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday at home starting at 3 p.m. before closing out their regular season at Martin Methodist on Friday ad Saturday.
