Lions Pitching Dominates Conference Opener

Box Score

The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (10-3, 1-0 MSC) defeated the Tigers of Campbellsville University (3-7, 0-1 MSC) by a score of 5-0.  Stellar pitching tamed the Tigers and gave the Lions time to score.

Senior pitcher Alex Huey started on the mound for the Lions.  Huey came out strong in the first and posted his first 1-2-3 inning of the day.  The Lions went down quietly and the score remained 0-0.

Huey returned and worked very quickly to grab another 3 up 3 down inning.  The Lions were able to scratch a run across after a double from Hunter Beecham and an RBI single from Kimmey Johnson.  The new score was 1-0.

The starting hurler showed no signs of letting up as he continued to pitch efficiently and posted his third 1-2-3 inning.  The Lions' bats struck again as they scored another two runs off of a 2-RBI single from Sean Rooney.  The new score was 3-0.

Huey continued to deal against the Tigers and once again threw a 1-2-3 inning.  The Lions were unable to get anything going and the score remained 3-0 after the fourth.

Huey's bid for perfection ended after he surrendered a lead-off walk in the fifth.  An out later, his no-hit bid ended after a single to right field.  The southpaw then went on to strike out the side.  The Lions went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

Huey kept up the pace and collected a pair of strikeouts in the sixth and still did not allow a run.  The Lions could not put anything together to scratch a run after a lead-off walk.

The left hander shut the Tigers down in the seventh and only allowed one hit.  The Lions were able to add some insurance runs from a 2-RBI double from Christian Presley.  The new score was 5-0.

Huey exited after pitching 7 complete innings, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits, 1 walk, and 10 strikeouts.  Wesley Culley entered for relief.  The Tigers threatened to score runs in the eighth but Culley was able to strand two runners and escape the inning.  The Lions were unsuccessful at driving a run in and the score remained 5-0.

Culley was able to shut the Tigers down in the ninth while collecting his second strikeout of the game.  Huey received the win and Culley received the save.

The Lions return for games 2 and 3 against Campbellsville tomorrow at Five Wells Field.
