Box Score The Freed-Hardeman University Lions took the series win against Bryan College, winning Game 2 8-4. The Lions offensive came to life early and late in the game to secure the win.
The Lions jumped on the board early in the first inning after a 2-RBI double by Zach Sanders. Tyler Duskin started on the mound for Freed-Hardeman. Bryan was able to tie the game 2-2 after an error and four walks.
The Lions picked up 3 more runs in the second inning thanks to a 2-run shot from Mason Libla and another RBI hit from Sanders, increasing the lead to 5-2. Duskin was able to hold the new lead held by the Lions at the end of the inning.
The team scored once again in the third on great first and third base running. They extended their lead to 6-2. After giving up a 2-run homerun, Duskin was able to limit the damage done by Bryan. The score at the end of the third was 6-4.
In the fourth inning, the Lions were unable to get anything going and did not score for the first time in the game. What seemed like the perfect opportunity for Bryan to score, the Lions stopped them by making a couple great defensive plays, including a 6-4-3 double play and an amazing diving catch by Sanders to end the inning.
The Lions went down quietly in the top of the fifth as the first three batters did not reach base. Duskin was pulled from the game after pitching 4 complete innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, 4 walks, and 1 strikeout. Wesley Culley entered the game for the Lions and made quick work of the Bryan hitters, only giving up 1 hit.
The Lions went down 1-2-3 in the sixth inning. Culley again worked very efficiently and posted his first 1-2-3.
Freed-Hardeman did not score in the seventh and only recorded one hit. The Lions defense was able to help Culley keep the 6-4 lead after the end of the seventh.
The Lions threatened to increase their lead after a lead off single and a walk, but they were unable to get any runs across the plate. Once again, Culley worked efficiently setting down two of the three batters he faced on strikes in the eighth.
The Lions added some much-needed insurance from a 2-RBI double from Christian Presley as they went into the last half inning. Culley finished the game as he sat down two more batters on strikes. Culley pitched a great 5 innings, allowing 0 runs on 3 hits, 0 walks, and 4 strikeouts.
Sanders, Libla, and Presley led the way for the offense as all three hitters tallied at least 2 RBIs a piece. Culley received the win after his performance.
The Lions now look to complete the sweep against Bryan College.
