Box Score The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (18-8, 6-4 MSC) defeated the Bears of Shawnee State University (7-14, 1-6 MSC). The long ball played a huge factor in today's game as the lead switched back and forth all game.
Senior Alex Huey got the start for the Lions. After allowing back to back singles in the first, Huey was able to strand the threatening running while collecting a pair of strikeouts. The Lions struck first after an RBI double from Zach Sanders. The score after the first was 1-0.
Huey posted his first 3 up 3 down inning in the second and collected his third strikeout on the day. Kent Rooklin led off the bottom of the inning with a solo laser over the left-centerfield wall. Two batters later, Hunter Beecham smashed a solo bomb over the same wall. The new score after the second was 3-0.
Huey put another 1-2-3 inning on the board as he collected his fourth and fifth strikeout in the third. In the bottom of the inning, the Lions went down 3 up 3 down for the first time of the game.
The Bears took the lead after Huey surrendered a grand slam. The new score was 4-3. The Lions bounced back into the lead with a 2-run opposite field rocket from Hunter Beecham. The score after the fourth was 5-4.
The Bears threatened to score with bases loaded but Huey was able to work out of the jam. The Lions increased their score by 1 run. The new score was 6-4.
Huey exited after 5 innings of work allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk, and 8 strikeouts. Freshman Wesley Culley entered for relief. He made quick work of the Bears' offense. The Lions went down quietly in the sixth.
The Bears evened the score after Culley surrendered a 2-run homerun in the top of the seventh. Culley exited after 1.1 innings pitched allowing 4 runs on 2 hits, 3 walks, and 1 strikeout. Luis Torrez-Lopez entered for relief. The Bears took the lead after Torrez surrendered a 3-run homerun. The new score was 9-6. The Lions cut down the lead after a 2-RBI double from William Kelley. Rooklin tied the game with an RBI single. Another RBI single from Caleb Molo put the Lions ahead. The score after the seventh was 10-9.
Torrez exited after 0.2 innings pitched allowing 1 run on 1 hit, 0 walks, and 1 strikeout. Connor Creasy entered to attempt the 6-out save. Creasy made quick work of the Bears with help from his defense. The Lions went down quietly in the eighth.
In the ninth, Creasy completed his electric save as the Lions won. Torrez received the win and Creasy earned the save.
The Lions will play a double header against Shawnee State tomorrow at Five Wells Field.
