Box Score The Freed-Hardeman University Lions (26-11, 13-6 MSC) defeated the Firehawks of UT Southern (11-22, 3-12 MSC) by a score of 16-1. The Lions dominated in all aspects of the game to win by mercy rule.
Southpaw Alex Huey got the start in Game 1. Huey threw a spectacular game, going the distance for the Lions. He pitched 7 complete innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts. The lone run came in the top of the sixth from a solo homer.
The Lions offense found many ways to score runs throughout the game. In the first inning, the Lions scored off of RBIs from Will McCall and William Kelley. In the second, Christian Presley doubled to the leftcenter field wall to score another run. The Lions put together a big inning in the third to score 6 more runs. The Lions scored 3 runs with good base running on wild pitches. The other runs came from RBI hits from Kelley and Ryan Stark. Mason Libla and Sean Rooney both homered in the fifth to put the Lions ahead 12-0. The Lions' final runs of the game would come in the sixth after back-to-back RBI doubles from Presley and Stark.
The Lions will play a double header against UT Southern tomorrow starting at 12:00 to determine the winner of the weekend series.
