HENDERSON — Competing against a former Mid-South Conference foe, the No. 25 Freed-Hardeman University Lions scored in the middle innings to top the University of Tennessee Southern Firehawks 3-0 in Tuesday's midweek battle.
The Lions (15-1) escaped multiple instances of damage including a double from UTS to start the game before a wild pitch placed the runner at third base with no outs. That threat was shortly erased when a line drive to
Brady Spring at third base turned into a double play.
FHU got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning after
Jordan Carter reached thanks to one of four UTS (3-12) errors before Spring unloaded for a two-run homer over the left-center field wall.
Christian Presley would tack on the third and final FHU run in the bottom of the sixth after tallying a two-out single. After
Trace Anderson reached on an error, Presley and Smithson completed a double-steal before a passed ball allowed Presley to make the score 3-0.
The Firehawks threatened in the top of the seventh when a hit batsmen and a pair of walks loaded the bases with one out. Reliever
Seth Creasy settled down to retire the next two batters on strikes to tightrope out of danger.
Matthew Riley (3-0) earned his third victory of the season where he struck out two batters in six innings of work.
Evan Koob (5) entered in the top of the eighth inning to toss two scoreless innings where he surrendered one hit and struck out three.
Four different Lions collected the four FHU hits with Spring's long ball being the biggest hit of the afternoon.
