FHU track and field competes at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. — On March 22-23, 2024, the FHU men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Margaret Simmons Invitational at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky. Aside from fellow NAIA teams Bethel (Tenn.) and Tennessee Southern, the competition consisted of NCAA D1 and D2 teams, such as Ball State, St. Louis University, Purdue—Ft. Wayne, and Southern Illinois. Weather conditions were cold and windy, creating extra challenges for the throwing and sprinting events. FHU's men's team finished ninth out of the fourteen teams which scored, ahead of Bethel and UT Southern.

Senior Sean Janiec continued his impressive season with a second place finish in the men's 400 meter run with a time of 50.29 seconds, the fourth fastest 400m time in school history. Janiec was the highest scoring runner in the race, as the first place finisher was running unattached. Janiec also set a personal record in the 200 meter run with a time of 22.53 seconds, the second fastest 200m in school history.

Freshman Barrett Poe won the men's 3000 meter steeplechase with a personal record time of 9:58.50, the third fastest time in school history.

In the men's 5000 meter race, sophomore Bo Scott finished in second place overall, only 1.0 second behind the winner from Lindenwood University. Scott set a new personal record time of 15:24.88, which is the fourth fastest 5K in school history.

The men's 4 x 800 meter relay team of Bo Scott, Daniel Puckett, Nathan Mangrum, and Grant O'Neal finished in fourth place with the second fastest time in school history. Anchor leg runner O'Neal beat the fifth-place UT Southern team by less than a second at the finish line.

Other personal records were set by Zola Dorris in the women's 5K, Caleb Bond in the 200m, Danny Douglas in the 5K, and Nathan Mangrum in the 800m. In his initial collegiate 1500 meter race, freshman Daniel Puckett ran the fourth fastest time in school history.
