Lion baseball falls to Tabor

OTTAWA, Kan. — Adjusting their spring break schedule to allow the opportunity for the No. 22 Freed-Hardeman University Lions to cheer on their men's basketball counterparts, FHU faced (RV) Tabor (Kan.) College Bluejays on the campus of Ottawa (Kan.) University. In a set of seven-inning affairs, the Lions dropped the first game 5-4 before falling 5-2.

Game 1
FHU - 4
Tabor - 5

A walk and a stolen base in the bottom of the first inning was followed by a single to allow Tabor to take a 1-0 lead over the FHU Lions (23-9). A double-play hoped to get the Lions out of the inning, but a two-out single gave the Bluejays a 2-0 lead.

The Lions saw Christian Presley smack an RBI double into right-center field before an RBI took the sting out of a double play to tie the Bluejays 19-8 up 2-2. After Jordan Carter doubled down the left field line, Cade Fuller powered a ball over the fence in left to finish up a four-run third inning.

Those four runs proved the be the only ones the Lions could muster while the Bluejays tied the game in the fifth before adding the 5-4 game winner in the bottom of the sixth.

Matthew Riley (4-2) went the distance for FHU where he struck out eight Tabor batters.

Christian Presley tallied a pair of hits while Cade Fuller drove in two.

Game 2
FHU - 2
Tabor - 5

Freed-Hardeman (23-10) hoped to be in business after Christian Presley beat a throw for an infield single before being able to take second after a late throw went wide. The Lions would record three outs and the early threat proving harmless
The Bluejays (20-8) scored a run in the bottom of the first before Jordan Carter plated the first FHU run after scoring due to a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the third a Tabor batter beat out a double-play attempt and drove in a run to set the score at 2-1. A solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fourth was followed by a runner scoring on a wild pitch to see the Lions trail 4-1. A sacrifice fly in the fifth saw the Lion deficit increase to 5-1.

After Cam Maddin led off the top of the seventh with a double, he was able to score thanks to Presley's RBI groundout, but the Lions could not scratch any more across to fall 5-2.

Followed by a platoon effort, starter Tyler Wingar (1-1) wore the loss, striking out three Bluejays in two innings.

The Lions recorded four hits in the loss with Christian Presley collecting FHU's lone RBI.
