HENDERSON — Dodging the incoming thunderstorm, the Freed-Hardeman University Lions battled the University of St. Francis (Ill.) Fighting Saints on Saturday. The Lions claimed the weekend sweep with an 8-2 win.
The Lions (9-4) managed to score all eight runs in the first four innings. A double from
Brooks Jones set up a sacrifice fly from
Cannon Daversa to give FHU the early lead.
Ben Turner knocked a three-bagger in the home half of the second inning to drive in FHU's second run.
Two runs were able to cross in the St. Francis (0-4) half of the third inning, but
Hunter Ryan's RBI groundout broke the tie to score the fourth run of the game. The Lions took advantage of a walk, a balk, a wild pitch, and a throwing error before Ryan's double ended FHU's scoring in the 8-2 victory.
Hunter Bennett (2-0) got the win after five complete innings where he struck out three. FHU's bullpen took over with a new pitcher each inning to hold the Saints scoreless across the last four innings.
