Long balls help Lions to doubleheader win

HENDERSON — Wrapping up the 2025 Mid-South Clash the Freed-Hardeman University Lions swept the Indiana University South Bend Titans in a Monday doubleheader. The Lions tallied three home runs in a 9-4 win in game one before connecting for two more in an 11-1 win to finish the day.

Freed-Hardeman (11-6) got off to a fast start thanks to the big fly from the bat of Trace Anderson in the Lions' first place appearance of the day. The Lions would strike again in the home half of the second highlighted by a two-run single from Hunter McLemore.

The Titans (3-6) would have an answer in the top of the fourth inning, striking for four runs to knot the first game of the day.

Facing a new pitcher, Anderson sent a 2-1 missile over the wall in left field for his second homer of the day to give the Lions the lead. Cade Fuller later unloaded on a pitch for a three-run round-tripper to push the Lions to the 9-5 victory.

Evan Koob got the start where he went 3 2/3 innings to strike out three batters. Clay Strope (1-0) earned the victory in relief where he struck out three in 2 2/3 innings and allowed just one hit before Patrick Cantrell wrapped up the win.

The big inning for the Titans came with back-to-back doubles was followed by a bases-loaded single. An errant throw allowed the final two runs to cross to knot the game.

Anderson wasted no time putting the Lions back on top, leading off the inning with his second big fly of the day. Cade Fuller launched his sixth homer for a three-run blast to also score Cam Madding and Austin Johnson.

Two more big flies helped the Lions (12-6) win the second game of the day with Drake Blackwood joining the fray for a two-run homer to open up a seven-run second inning. Cade Fuller and Jordan Carter had back-to-back two-run base knocks to push the lead.

The IUSB (3-7) hitters were stymied until the top of the fifth inning when a leadoff walk and a wild pitch was followed by a ground-rule double.

Cade Fuller hit his team-leading seventh home run of the day to help give the Lions the 11-1 win.

Hunter Bennett (3-0) hurled five innings where he struck out two before Tyler Wilson took over the final two innings.

Drake Blackwood put the Lions on top with a two-run homer to score himself and Hunter McLemore before Cam Madding drew a bases-loaded walk to score Dawson Massengale. Cade Fuller smoked a double up the middle to plate both Austin Johnson and Brooks Jones. Jordan Carter put a bow on the seven-run inning with a two-run double to score Fuller and Madding.
