Lions blast Warriors to win series

HENDERSON — The Freed-Hardeman Lions pitching staff showed off in a one-hitter to defeat the (RV) Indiana Tech Warriors 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader before the Lion offense exploded for a 17-1 victory in seven innings.

Game 1
Indiana Tech - 0
Freed-Hardeman - 2

A tale of two games first featured a pitching duel where the Lions' (16-9) three pitchers held the Warriors hitless for 6 1/3 innings. The FHU bats were not much more successful, with Hunter Ryan's two-run double in the second inning being the only run-scoring play of the game.

The Warriors (7-3) got their first base hit with a close play at first in the top of the seventh before a double-play ended the inning and the game.

Four different Lions recorded all four hits with Ryan's double being the big hit.

Evan Koob got a no-decision after a 2 2/3 inning start before Zach Seward (1-0) got the win after 3 1/3 innings of relief where he struck out four. In an appearance out of the bullpen, Colton Byrant got his first save of the year in one inning of action.

Scoring Summary

Bottom 2
Hunter Ryan's double scoring Austin Johnson and Dawson Massengale was the only scoring of the game, but enough to get the victory.

Game 2 (7 inn.)
Indiana Tech - 1
Freed-Hardeman - 17

The bats came alive in a major way for the Lions (17-9) in the second game of the day, particularly in a 10-hit 11-run second inning. Cade Fuller got the inning with a specialty double: being hit by a pitch before stealing second. After five singles helped FHU bat around in the inning, Fuller had a traditional double to plate a set of runs. JJ Pruneau added an RBI double in the double-digit scoring inning.

Indiana Tech (7-4) did not go down quietly, leading off the third inning with a single before two more singles loaded the bases. A walk then drove in the lone Tech run of the day.

Despite the offensive fireworks, Brooks Jones would hit the only home run of the day with a moonshot to right field to score himself and two more to put icing on the cake of victory.

JJ Pruneau and Ben Turner had the best day at the plate for FHU, each tallying three base hits while Cade Fuller, Dawson Massengale, and Jordan Carter each had two hits. The top run producers were Fuller, Turner, and Brooks Jones who each drove in three.

Cooper Johnson got the start where he struck out four in three innings of work. Jaxson Lucas (1-0) tossed the remaining four innings where he allowed one hit while striking out two.

Scoring Summary

Bottom 2
FHU's massive 11-run second inning started when JJ Pruneau singled home Cade Fuller. Ben Turner then tallied a two-run single to plate Dawson Massengale and Austin Johnson. Turner later scored on Trace Anderson's single before Fuller doubled to score both Hunter McLemore and Chase Eakes. Pruneau again drove Fuller home in the inning, this time on a double. Massengale legged out an infield single to score Johnson before Dalton Bonner's single scored Massengale. A wild pitch allowed Bonner to tap home to close the big inning.
