FHU dropped by Wildcats in finale

MCKENZIE, Tenn. — Though already securing the series victory, the Freed-Hardeman University Lions hoped a late comeback could cement the sweep, but the Bethel University Wildcats spoiled the weekend finale with a 5-4 final.

Trace Anderson led off the game for the Lions (24-15, 5-4 MSC) with a single before Dawson Massengale followed with a single but no runs would cross. The Lions tightroped out of danger after the Wildcats managed three hits in the bottom of the second but never scored a run.

Bethel (15-16, 3-8 MSC) got the first run of the game with an RBI single before Jordan Carter drove in the tying run in the top of the sixth. The bottom of the frame was a big one for Bethel who went on to score four runs. RBI singles from JJ Pruneau and Cam Madding drove in runs in the top of the seventh before Anderson drove in a run to make it a one-run game, but the Wildcats shut down the Lions in the final inning.

The Lions tallied six base knocks with Jordan Carter and Cam Madding each connecting for two.

Cooper Johnson had three strikeouts in a no-decision start with Hunter Bennett (4-2) being saddled with the loss.
