FHU falls twice in shootout doubleheader

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — There were a combined 51 runs scored during Saturday's doubleheader between the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lions and the No. 2 Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies. The Lions came up short both games, falling 15-13 in game one before a 15-8 defeat.

Scoring at a breakneck pace, the Lions (17-8) were able to score in six of the seven innings played including putting up four runs in the top of the first inning.

The momentum swing came in the bottom of the fifth when Georgia Gwinnett (26-2) was able to score 10 runs. FHU added four runs in the last two innings, but fell short.

JJ Pruneau was 4-for-5 from the dish in the loss, followed by a three-hit game for Trace Anderson. Brennen Gibson, Brooks Jones, and Brennan Petersen each had two hits.

Hunter McLemore (2-2) had the start where he pitched 4 1/3 innings while striking out two batters.

After Drake Blackwood and Brooks Jones reached base with a walk and a double, respectively, JJ Pruneau's single would drive home both runners. After a Hunter Ryan single, Brennen Gibson drove in the third run of the inning with a single before Brennan Peterson drove home the fourth run.

For the second time in the day, the Lions (17-9) took an early lead with JJ Pruneau driving home a run with a single. Freed-Hardeman put up multiple runs in the third and fourth inning before being held scoreless across the next three. Brennen Gibson had a solo homer in the eighth, but no other FHU run would cross.

Though being out-hit by the Lions 16-13, Georgia Gwinnett (27-2) sent runs across the plate in seven of the eight innings they went to bat. 

For the second straight game, JJ Pruneau went 4-for-5 from the plate while Brennen Gibson drove home three runs with his three-hit game. Trace Anderson, Drake Blackwood, and Tyree Claxton each had two base hits.

Grayson Waller (3-2) had the start with 3 1/3 innings before giving way to the FHU bullpen.
