Drew Massengale picked up the individual win at the Eagles Open in Waleska, Ga. at the Lake Arrowhead YCC to start the season for the Lions golf team. After 1 round, Massengale was one off the leader shooting a 66 (-5), and was able to tie the hot round in round 2 with another 66 (-5). Down by one stroke, Massengale started Round 3 by birdieing four of the first nine holes in his round and then was able to cruise into a victory with seven consecutive pars to shoot a 68 (-3) and win the tournament by two strokes, shooting a total score of 200 (-13).
As a team, the Lions were able to grab sixth place out of nine teams. After Round 1, the Lions were in fourth place by shooting a team score of +8, with Lucas Gupton shooting a 72 (+1), Leo Huddleston and Jayce Hutchens both shooting a 73 (+2), and Chad Joyner shooting a 74 (+3). Round 2 proved to be more difficult for the Lions as they fell back to sixth place shooting +18 to take their team score to +26 for the tournament. On Day 2 and Round 3, however, they were able to find their footing and shoot +7 as a team, marking their final team score a +33. Gupton finished in 15th place individually by shooting +5 for the tournament, Huddleston finished in 16th with a score of +6, and Lane Walton was able to shoot -2 in the final round to improve his overall score to +10. Joyner rounded the team scoring out with a +14 for the tournament.Â
On his way to victory, Massengale broke multiple FHU Golf records, including lowest stroke average in a tournament and the 54-hole tournament score. The lowest stroke average record was 70.3, and Massengale recorded a 66.67 average across all three rounds. The 54-hole tournament record was a 214, and Massengale shot an impressive 200.
The Lions next tournament will be the Firehawk Invitational in Athens, Ala. on September 14 and 15.
