Tucker dominates senior night as FHU sweeps Union

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
HENDERSON, Tenn. - On senior night, the night truly belonged to one senior in particular.
Tarrah Tucker pitched a no-hitter in the first game and then drove in the game-winning run in the second game to lead FHU to a sweep of Union (Tenn.) University, 9-0 and 8-7, on Thursday evening at Morgan Stadium.
There was no doubt the senior pitcher was on her game from the start. Tucker retired the first nine Lady Bulldog hitters on strikeouts while FHU exploded for six runs in the bottom of the second, all coming with two outs. She finally allowed a base runner in the top of the fourth after walking Lindsey Landreneau on a full count, but she would be the only Union player to reach base.
Freed-Hardeman continued to add to its lead with another run in the third on Traci Gibbons' RBI double and two more in the fourth on Tucker's two-run single. The 9-0 lead was plenty enough for Tucker, who retired the final five hitters she faced to complete the run-rule win. She ended the game with 10 strikeouts.
FHU's five seniors combined to 6-for-7 from the plate in game one. Brittany Bradford's single in the second inning was the 200th hit of her career, making her the first player in FHU history to reach the milestone.
Union got its first hit of the night to lead off game two after Michelle Albonetti singled to left off of FHU starter Britney Caldwell. Three batters later, Ashley Blankenship singled to bring her home and give the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The lead would hold for three innings as Union starter Hailee Edwards held FHU without a hit. But in the bottom of the fourth, Caldwell broke up the no-hitter with a one-out single that triggered a four-run inning highlighted by Gibbons' two-run double.
With Caldwell cruising in the circle, Freed-Hardeman picked up another run in the bottom of the sixth on a Tucker RBI double and appeared to be well on their way to the sweep.
Union, however, wasn't going down without a fight.
Kristen Kirk reached on an error to start the top of the seventh, the first of four Lady Lion errors in the inning, and Union took advantage by scoring six runs - five of which came with two outs. Tucker (16-2) relieved Caldwell to strike out Kirk to end the inning after Union batted around and took a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Edwards retired Jill Brock and Brittany Bradford to start the inning, but Caldwell kept FHU alive with a monster solo homerun (5) to left-center field to put the Lady Lions within one run. Senior Carmen Gulley followed with a two-strike single to centerfield, setting the table for Brittany Yates to drive a 3-2 pitch deep into the left-center gap for a double that brought in the tying run.
Sydney McMillin relieved Edwards and hit FHU's next hitter, Camille Cunningham, in the leg with her first pitch to bring Tucker to the plate.
Tucker delivered with what was perhaps her biggest hit at Freed-Hardeman, mashing a McMillin offering into deep right-center to bring Yates home for the game-winner.
Gulley, Caldwell and Tucker accounted for seven of FHU's nine hits in game two. Gulley went 3-for-4 while Caldwell and Tucker each went 2-for-4.
Freed-Hardeman improves to 22-8 on the season and 9-3 in TranSouth Conference play, sealing the No. 2 seed in next week's conference tournament. FHU also swept the regular season series from Union (22-21, 7-5) for the first time in program history.
The Lady Lions travel to Batesville, Ark., tomorrow for the regular season finale against Lyon (Ark.) College.
