Box Score PULASKI, Tenn. -- The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions will attempt to accomplish a couple of firsts this week at the TranSouth Conference softball tournament hosted by Martin Methodist College.
FHU (24-8, 11-3) enters as the No. 2 seed in the tournament and will be looking for its first conference championship. The Lady Lions finished runner-up in 2007.
Also at stake is an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament in Decatur, Ala. Freed-Hardeman has never qualified for nationals, but winning the conference tournament would send them there for the first time ever.
Even if they don't win the conference tournament, the Lady Lions still hold onto the hope of an at-large bid to Decatur. FHU is ranked No. 23 in the latest NAIA national poll, with the final poll to come out next Tuesday. The team's current ranking puts it squarely on the bubble.
Freed-Hardeman opens the tournament at 2:00 pm today against seventh-seeded Mid-Continent (Ky.) University. The Lady Lions swept the only meeting between the teams this season, 4-0 and 10-1 on April 6 in Henderson.
