Box Score PULASKI, Tenn. - It seemed only fitting that almost immediately after striking out a school-record 18 batters,
Tarrah Tucker was named the TranSouth Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Tucker led a group of six Lady Lions to be named to the All-TranSouth Conference squads announced during the first day of play at the conference tournament in Pulaski, Tenn. Tucker was also named to the first team along with
Brittany Bradford and
Britney Caldwell.
Brittany Steverson,
Carmen Gulley, and
Brittany Yates were all honored as second-team selections.
Tucker, a senior from Lyles, Tenn., was named to the first team for the second straight season after being a second-team selection as a sophomore. Tucker went 17-2 in the regular season with a 1.11 ERA and 175 strikeouts in 114 innings pitched and ranked fourth in the nation in opponent batting average (.126).
Bradford, a senior catcher from Henderson, Tenn., is a four-time all-conference selection and has been on the first team each of the last three seasons. Her .414 batting average in the regular season was tops in the conference. She currently holds several school hitting records and became the first player in program history to record 200 hits with her single against Union (Tenn.) on April 23.
Caldwell, a junior P/1B from Dickson, Tenn., made her third appearance on the first-team all conference squad. Caldwell hit .305 in the regular season with five homeruns and 28 RBIs, and went 7-6 in the circle with a 1.98 ERA. She was conference freshman of the year in 2007.
Gulley, a senior outfielder from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., returned to the all-conference team for the first time since being selected to the second team as a freshman. Gulley hit .300 in the regular season, including a .524 average over her last eight games, and led the team with nine steals in 11 attempts.
Steverson, a sophomore outfielder from Burns, Tenn., is a repeat selection on the second team. FHU's leadoff hit recorded a team-best 39 hits and 26 runs while hitting .345 at the plate.
Yates, a freshman third baseman from Jackson, Tenn., rounded out the six FHU players to be honored. Yates led the Lady Lions with 30 RBIs and blasted five homeruns while hitting .315.
The Lady Lions also had seven players honored as TranSouth Conference Scholar Athletes: Bradford, Gulley,
Jill Brock,
Natalie Carson,
Traci Gibbons,
Augusta McClary, and
Audra Yopp. To be a scholar-athlete, students must be a sophomore, junior, or senior and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
