Box Score PULASKI, Tenn. - It wasn't her usual dominant performance in terms of strikeouts, but Freed-Hardeman pitcher
Tarrah Tucker was still good enough to record her 11th shutout of the season in a 2-0 win over Union (Tenn.) University at the TranSouth Conference tournament on Thursday.
The senior scattered four hits over seven innings, walking two and striking out seven, while
Traci Gibbons and
Brittany Yates delivered RBI singles as the Lady Lions advanced to the winners' bracket finals.
Tucker (19-2), who no-hit Union on April 23 with 10 strikeouts in five innings, gave up back-to-back singles with two outs in the first inning to Ali Thomas and Ashley Blankenship before striking out Katie Davis to get out of the jam.
FHU later drew first blood in the third inning after
Camille Cunningham lead off with a single and advanced to second on a Tucker sacrifice bunt.
Traci Gibbons then put the Lady Lions on the board with a base-hit into the right-center gap to bring in Cunningham.
The lone run would be all Tucker needed, though the Lady Bulldogs threatened at times.
Union put runners on first and second with two out in the fourth, but Tucker stopped the potential rally by striking out Sydney McMillin. She did it again in the sixth after Lindsey Landreneau reached third with two down, fanning Davis again to end the inning. The TranSouth Pitcher of the Year then closed out the game by striking out Ali Bozza to send FHU to its 26th win of the season.
Four of Tucker's seven strikeouts came as the final outs of an inning, each time with at least one runner on base.
Yates gave the Lady Lions an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out single that scored
Brittany Bradford from third for her team-leading 31st RBI of the season.
Freed-Hardeman tallied five hits off of Union's Hailee Edwards with Bradford going 2-for-3. Tucker's 11th shutout broke her own single-season record of 10, set last season.
The Lady Lions take on Bethel (Tenn.) College tomorrow at 1:00 pm. Bethel upset top-seeded Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College, 2-0, in the 3:00 pm game today. Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.), Mid-Continent (Ky.), Cumberland (Tenn.), and Lyon (Ark.) were all eliminated today with their second losses of the tournament.
