Box Score 2 PULASKI, Tenn. - Before today's season-opening double header against No. 24 Campbellsville (Ky.) University, the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team had been able to practice outside for a total of one hour thanks to the continued snow and ice that kept the field at Morgan Stadium unplayable.
It still didn't keep them from earning a split with the Lady Tigers. FHU took the first game, 5-1, before losing the second game, 10-2, at the Martin Methodist Meltdown.
Britney Caldwell worked out of several jams in the first game to limit CU to one run, which came in the first inning. The senior allowed only five hits over seven innings, but also walked five and hit another batter.
FHU tied the game in the third, then took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by
Amber VanSandt after
Natalie Carson and
Augusta McClary hit back-to-back singles.
Brittany Yates went 3-for-4 in the opening game while Carson went 2-for-3 to lead FHU at the plate.
Brittany Steverson, McClary, VanSandt and
Traci Gibbons also collected one hit apiece in the win.
In the second game, it was Campbellsville who blew the game open in the fourth inning, scoring seven times in the bottom of the frame off of freshmen Savannah and
Summer Cole who were working in their first collegiate games.
The Lady Tigers led 3-0 after two innings, but FHU scored a pair of runs on a two-run single by
Betsy Pickler in the third to make it a 3-2 game before CU pulled away in the next inning.
FHU had as many hits - six - as Campbellsville, but the Lady Tigers benefited from 10 walks. Steverson, Yates, Pickler and McClary each had hits as did
Jill Brock and
Audra Yopp.
The Lady Lions finish off the two-day tournament tomorrow with games against Georgetown (Ky.) College and Aquinas College.
