Box Score 2 NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Britney Caldwell threw her fourth shutout of the year as the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions advanced in the TranSouth Conference tournament with a 4-0 win over Mid-Continent (Ky.) University on Thursday morning at Trevecca Nazarene University.
FHU (17-25) breaks a seven-game losing streak and advances to take on the loser of the game between Union (Tenn.) University and Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College at 5:00 PM.
The Lady Lions took an early lead after
Brandi Edwards led off inning with a bunt single and came around to score three batters later on an RBI groundout by
Brittany Yates.
Caldwell (16-16), meanwhile, was lights out in the early going, striking out four through two innings, then pitched out of jams in the third and fourth innings with more strikeouts.
In the third, MCU got runners at second and third with two outs, but Caldwell got a strikeout to end the inning. Back-to-back singles in the fourth gave the Cougars runners at first and second with one out before Caldwell came back with a strikeout and a groundout back to the circle to keep FHU's one-run lead in tact.
Yates added to FHU's lead with a solo home run (7) to left-center to lead off the fourth inning to make it 2-0, and one inning later the Lady Lions doubled up the lead with two more runs.
Caneisha Turner led off the fifth with a bunt single, advanced to second with her fifth stolen base of the year, and scored from second when Edwards' ground ball sneaked through the hole at shortstop. Pickler followed with a single to left field to score Edwards.
The Lady Lion defense helped to erase another potential threat in the sixth, turning a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning, and Caldwell coaxed a groundout with runners on first and second in the seventh to complete the shutout.
