Box Score 2 MAYFIELD, Ky. - Getting on base wasn't a problem for the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions in a double-header with Mid-Continent (Ky.) on Monday afternoon, but getting across the plate proved to be a little more difficult.
FHU stranded a total of 30 base runners as the Lady Lions dropped both games, 4-3 in 10 innings and 6-5 in 11 innings.
Both times, FHU (11-17, 2-4) scored a run in the top of the seventh to tie the score and eventually send the games into extra innings. But each time FHU scored in the extra frames, Mid-Continent (8-16-1, 3-5) answered.
Lisa Szatkowski iced game one with a two-out, two-strike single to score the winning run in the 10th inning, and Jennifer Martinez did the same with one out in the 11th inning of game two.
FHU forced extra innings in the first game after putting runners on the corners with no outs. Caneshia Turner, running for
Augusta McClary at third, got caught in a rundown after a bunt by
Brittany Steverson, but Marissa Nickerson's throwing error allowed Turner to score the tying run.
However, the Lady Lions missed an opportunity to take the lead after leaving the bases loaded with no outs. FHU also left the bases loaded in the first and ninth innings and stranded 16 runners in the first game.
Brandi Edwards put Freed-Hardeman back on top in the 10th inning with a one-out RBI triple. But Steverson and
Britney Caldwell both struck out, leaving Edwards 60 feet away from home. Mid-Continent finished the game in the bottom of the inning with two runs, the final one coming on Szatkowski's single.
In game two,
Amber VanSandt hit her first career home run in the second inning to give FHU a 2-0 lead, but three Lady Lion errors in the bottom of the inning lead to three Cougar runs.
Freed-Hardeman tied the game again in the seventh inning when Edwards scored on a two-out error, but the Lady Lions again left the bases loaded. Caldwell then pitched out of a bases-loaded jam of her own in the bottom of the inning by getting a strikeout and a pop-up to escape.
Augusta McClary's RBI single in the 10th gave FHU a 4-3 lead, but MCU tied it back up in the bottom of the inning. Caldwell hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th as the Lady Lions retook the lead before MCU swept the double-header with two runs in the home half of the inning.
Caldwell took the loss in both games, allowing one earned run and striking out 10 in game one and three earned runs with nine strikeouts in game two.
Edwards had seven hits on the day, including four in the first game to tie a school record.
Brittany Yates had two hits in the first game while VanSandt had two in the second game.
