Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - Freed-Hardeman freshman pitcher
Sarah Elizabeth Cousar had the best day of her young career in the circle, leading the Lady Lions to a double-header sweep of Blue Mountain (Miss.) College, 7-4 and 1-0, on Tuesday night at Morgan Stadium.
Cousar (6-5) won both ends of the twinbill, allowing no earned runs in a total of 12.2 innings pitched capped off by a five-hit shutout in game two. The freshman did not allow a hit until the third inning of the second game, with her time in the first game split after
Betsy Pickler entered in relief in the fifth inning after FHU had built a 7-0 lead.
The Lady Lions (10-13, 5-5) got a run in the first inning off of BMC starter Meggin Nelson on an RBI double by
Brittany Yates, then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third after the first two batters of the inning were retired on stellar defensive plays by the Lady Toppers.
Yates drew a two-out walk to start the rally and, after Yates beat out a throw to second base on a grounder to shortstop, the Lady Lions pounded four straight hits highlighted by
Bailey Morgan's bases-clearing double that narrowly missed going over the left-field fence.
BMC got a run in the fourth despite not getting a hit, taking advantage of three FHU errors, then added three more in the sixth off of Pickler before Cousar returned to the circle and got the last two outs of the inning.
In game two, Yates' solo home run (4) to lead off the second inning proved to be the difference as Cousar tossed her second shutout of the season, striking out six and walking two in the win.
Morgan and
Augusta McClary each had a pair of hits in game one while
Natalie Nelson went 2-for-3 in game two.
The Lady Lions travel to Union (Tenn.) University on Wednesday for a double-header at 1:00 PM.
