Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lions scored four times in the eighth inning to open a three-game series with No. 14 Union (Tenn.) University with an 8-6 win on Friday night.
The four-run inning answered a three-run seventh by the Bulldogs, which gave them a 6-4 lead.
Ben Ihde got the rally started with a one-out single, then moved to third on a double by
Kirkland Wheeler.
Joe Mike's groundout to second scored Ihde from third, but left the Lions trailing by one with two outs.
Pinch-hitter
Ryan Grigaitis drew a walk to end the day for Union starter Will Irvin. Reliever Cody Dew inherited a bases-loaded situation, and the Lions got two runs off of him without putting a ball in play.
Kyle Dearing was hit by a pitch to tie the game, and
Justin Mackey followed with a walk to bring in the go-ahead run.
Robert Prieto's single to right field added another run.
Amos Bingham protected the two-run lead over the final two innings, allowing one hit and retiring the last five batters he faced to earn his first save of the season.
Drew Suttles (1-0) picked up the win in relief of
Roberto Ferguson. Suttles also inherited a bases-loaded jam in the seventh with one out and gave up a double before setting down the next two hitters to get out of the inning.
Both teams scored in the second and third innings to go to the fourth tied 3-3. FHU then took the lead in the top of the inning on an RBI single by
Justin Mackey. The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Lions (15-7, 3-1) out-hit Union, 12-9, but three FHU errors led to two unearned runs for the Bulldogs. Mackey, Prieto and
Joe Mike each had two hits for Freed-Hardeman.
The series concludes with a double-header tomorrow beginning at noon.
