HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions extended their winning streak to five games, taking both ends of a double-header from Missouri Baptist on a chilly Friday afternoon by scores of 8-7 and 9-1.
The seventh inning of game one was an eventful one. FHU took a 5-4 lead into the final frame before giving up three to the Spartans. All three runs scored on a double by Andrea Chessor followed by two errors when the Lady Lion defense tried to cut down runs at the plate.
Freed-Hardeman would get them all back in the bottom of the inning, getting timely hits from freshmen Madison Reed and Sierra Bateman to help set the table for Kohnley Wade whose single up the middle tied the game. Kamara Trice was intentionally walked for the second time to load the bases for pinch-hitter Allie Carpenter with one out.
Carpenter hit a grounder back to MBU pitcher Chessor, who threw the ball home for the force. But Spartan catcher Payton Anderson pulled her foot off the plate, allowing Bateman to cross with the winning run.
The second game was much more uneventful. Wade continued her hot streak with an RBI triple in the first and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Bond. Two innings later, Trice connected on a three-run home run (8) to make it a 5-0 FHU lead.
The Spartans got one back in the fourth, but Freed-Hardeman finished the job in the fifth with four runs to complete the run-rule victory.
The Lady Lions (11-6, 5-1) kept their hot hitting alive with 10 hits in game one and 11 in game two. Wade went 4-for-5 in the opener with two RBIs while Trice reached base safely five times, drawing four walks. Trice followed with a 2-for-3 performance in game two. Jessica Weeks was a perfect 3-for-3 in the finale.
Mallory Spurlock (5-2) picked up the win in game one, allowing four earned runs over seven innings, while Trice (6-1) scored the victory in game two. She allowed one run with three strikeouts over five innings in the run-shortened game.
