Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Tenn. - Hits were not in short supply for either team in a non-conference double-header between Freed-Hardeman and Bethel (Tenn.) University on Monday night.
The two teams combined for 60 hits - 30 in each game - as they split the contests with Bethel winning the opener, 11-7, before FHU responded with a 15-9 win in the nightcap.
Bethel scored seven times in the first two innings of game one off of Lady Lion starter Katie Clarke (0-2), then plated three more in the fifth to push its lead to 10-4. Freed-Hardeman never held the lead, but did its best to stay close with a three-run fifth.
It looked as though FHU might continue to close the gap in the sixth after Caitlyn Carter and Lauren Bradley had back-to-back singles with one out, but Carter was cut down at third attempting to stretch on Bradley's hit. It killed the rally, and Bethel added an insurance run in the seventh that was aided by two Lady Lion errors on the same play.
Katie Sholl led off the bottom of the seventh with a single but Brooke Baucum retired the next three hitters to clinch the win in relief of BU starter Heather Johnson, who only lasted three innings.
Bradley went 4-for-4 in game one for her second four-hit game of the season. Jessica Weeks, Amanda Bond and Bo Sullivan all had two hits in the game.
In the nightcap, it was Freed-Hardeman (14-7) that jumped on top early thanks to a three-run double by Bond in the first inning and a two-run home run by Kamara Trice (9) in the second. But the Lady Wildcats quickly erased the deficit with four runs in the third, then took the lead with four more in the fourth. All of those runs came with two outs after a dropped fly ball extended the inning.
However, the Lady Lions had an answer with six runs in the bottom of the inning. Four of those runs came with two outs on a two-run single by Bradley followed by RBI singles by Sullivan and Allie Carpenter.
FHU tacked on four more runs in the sixth and almost ended the game via run rule on a deep fly ball by Trice that was caught at the track in left-center. Madison Reed followed that with a two-run triple but was stranded at third when Baylee Terranova's hard shot to left field was pulled in.
The Lady Wildcats tried to stay alive, putting two runners on with one out. Both appeared to score on a single by Kayla Guthrie but the second runner was called out for failing to touch home plate.
Terranova (1-2) then retired the final batter to earn her first college win, working 3-1/3 innings of relief of Trice. Terranova allowed three hits and one run to help seal the victory.
Weeks, Kohnley Wade and Jenna Graham all had three hits in the second game while Sullivan, Carpenter and Reed each had two. FHU totaled a season-high 19 hits in the win in the second half and had 14 in the first.
UP NEXT: FHU returns to action tomorrow hosting Williams Baptist (Ark.) in a double-header beginning at 2:00 PM.
