Box Score 2 COLUMBIA, Mo. - With their season on the line, the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions turned to one of their seniors to keep it alive.
And as she often does, Kamara Trice delivered.
Trice limited one of the AMC's top offenses in Williams Baptist (Ark.) to two runs, and the Lady Lions used a four-run third inning to score a 6-2 win over the Eagles and stay alive in the American Midwest Conference tournament.
FHU (25-16) ended up in the elimination game after a 7-0 loss to William Woods (Mo.) in the morning as Allison Waskow tossed a three-hitter and the Owls homered three times in the first inning off of Katie Clarke (3-4).
The Lady Lions, though, bounced back with a run in the first inning of game two, then plated four in the third while getting six of their 14 hits in the inning. Bo Sullivan, another senior, had a two-run double that got things going after FHU loaded the bases with no outs. Allie Carpenter followed with an RBI single and Sierra Bateman added a run-scoring groundout.
Trice, meanwhile, kept WBC off the board until a two-out solo home run in the fourth by Andrea Drake ended the shutout bid. The Eagles got another solo shot in the fifth, this time from Laura Bell, to make it 5-2.
While Williams Baptist used power to score, the Lady Lions resorted to small ball in the sixth for insurance. Caitlyn Carter beat out a bunt, and WBC followed with two throwing errors that allowed Jessica Weeks to score from first.
Trice (10-4) didn't need the extra run, though, as she shut down the Eagles in the last two innings to finish off the complete-game victory.
Trice went 3-for-4 in the win while Weeks, Carter, Carpenter and Katie Sholl all had two hits.
It was a stark contrast from the opening game as FHU struggled to put runners on base against WWU's Waskow. The best scoring opportunity came in the first inning with two runners on and two outs, but Waskow coaxed a ground ball out of Lauren Bradley to end the inning. The Lady Lions didn't have a runner advance past second for the rest of the game while Waskow retired the final 10 batters she faced.
The Lady Lions play again on Friday at 9:00 AM, taking on the loser of the winners bracket semifinal between sixth-seeded Columbia (Mo.) and seventh-seeded Missouri Baptist.
