SETTING THE STAGE
FHU enters Saturday's match-up coming off a split with Park (Mo.) University in their conference opener Friday afternoon as they fell 5-4 in the opening game and followed with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.
Makenzie Prince (4-4) picked up the loss in the opening game as she gave up 10 hits, three walks and five earned runs while striking out just one. However, Prince did lead the Lady Lions at the plate as she went 2-for-3 on the day while Jenna Graham followed close behind with two RBI's in the loss.
FHU would get things started in the top of the third inning as Kristen Hunsicker would score the first run for the Lady Lions after reaching on a walk. Katie Sholl would advance Hunsicker to second with a single down the left field line while a sacrifice bunt by Caitlyn Carter would move her to third. Jenna Graham would take care of things from there with a ground out to second to score Hunsicker and give the Lady Lions a 1-0 lead.
Park would come storming back in the bottom half of the third inning as two runs would cross the plate after they were able to put together a two-out rally. Britanee Willard and Justice Scales would score for Park in the inning after they both reached on singles up the middle.
The Lady Lions would do a majority of their damage in the top half of the fifth inning as three runs would cross the plate to give FHU the 4-3 lead. Hunsicker, Sholl and Caitlyn Carter would all cross the plate in the inning to provide a slight cushion for FHU.
However, the one-run cushion would not be enough as Park would put together a two-run seventh inning to close out the game and pick up the 5-4 victory.
Two runs would be all FHU needed in the nightcap as they held on for a 2-1 victory over the Pirates to split the Friday series. Mallory Spurlock (3-3) worked seven innings in the win while allowing just four hits and striking out three. Makenzie Prince led the Lady Lions at the plate as she went 2-for-3 on the day and contributed two RBI's in the contest.
The Lady Lions would strike first in the top of the first inning as Allie Carpenter reached base on a single and would later score as Makenzie Prince would connect on a single to left field to drive her in.
FHU would push one more run across in the sixth inning as Caitlyn Carter would open the inning with a bunt to safely reach first base. Jenna Graham would advance Carter to second on a sacrifice bunt of her own to put runners in scoring position. Carter would score later in the inning off another RBI single by Makenzie Prince, this time to left field.
The insurance run in the top of the sixth inning proved to be important as Park would get on the board in the bottom half of the sixth inning to close the gap. Katie Carr would get the drive started for the Pirates after reaching on a walk and would score the only run of the game for Park later in the inning after Mallory Land sent a deep shot to left-center field for a double to tighten things up 2-1.
However, Spurlock would shut the Pirates down in the bottom half of the seventh inning to pick up the 2-1 victory in the nightcap for a Friday split in their conference opener.
