BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team moved to double digits in the win column Tuesday as they swept Blue Mountain College with a 4-1 victory in the opening game followed by a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Mallory Spurlock (6-3) picked up the win in the opening game after working three innings in relief of Makenzie Prince, allowing just one hit and striking out four. Makenzie Prince started the opening game and worked four solid innings allowing just one hit and striking out four to give the Lady Lions all the momentum to start the game.
Katie Sholl led the Lady Lions at the plate in the opening game as she went 3-for-3 and contributed and RBI while Caitlyn Carter went 2-for-4 on the day and had one RBI and scored twice in the win.
FHU would start their scoring drive late in the game as they plated two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Katie Sholl would get the scoring drive started for the Lady Lions as she would cross the plate off a sacrifice fly from Allie Carpenter. Caitlyn Carter would also cross the plate in the inning off a sacrifice fly from Mallory Spurlock to keep FHU ahead in the game.
The Lady Lions would plate two more runs in the top half of the seventh inning as Malorie Prince would cross the plate off an RBI from Katie Sholl. Sholl would also score in the inning off an RBI from Jenna Graham to give the Lady Lions all they needed to take the opening game with a final score of 4-1.
The Lady Lions would carry the momentum from the opening game into the nightcap as they found their groove early. Spurlock picked up her second win of the day after working five full innings and allowing just five hits while striking out five for her sixth victory of the season.
Makenzie Prince would come in for relief of Spurlock to close things out as she worked two full innings and allowed just three hits while striking out one.
Caitlyn Carter led the Lady Lions at the plate in the nightcap as she went 2-for-3 and had two RBI's. Jenna Graham also gave the Lady Lions a spark as she went 3-for-4 in the game with an RBI while Katie Sholl went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Katie Sholl would get things started for FHU as she crossed the plate in the top of the third inning off an RBI single from Jenna Graham to put FHU on the board.
The Lady Lions did a majority of their damage in the top half of the fourth inning as four runs would cross the plate. Five runs would prove to be just enough as FHU was able to outlast the Toppers 5-4 to pick up their eleventh win of the season.
With the sweep, the Lady Lions move to 11-7 on the season and remain at 3-1 in conference play.
