HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion Softball team picked up a sweep of Martin Methodist College Tuesday afternoon with a 10-1 pounding in the opening game followed by a 3-0 shutout in the nightcap at Morgan Stadium.
The Lady Lions (4-0) pounded out 13 hits in the opening game, led by Caitlyn Carter who went 3-for-4 with a triple. Freshman Annalise Jarnagin also found success at the plate, as she went 2-for-4 with a homerun and five RBI in the win.
In addition to her fantastic play in the circle in the opening game, Makenzie Prince (2-0) also found success at the plate, going 3-for-3 in the opener with a double and two RBI in the win. In the circle, Prince allowed just three hits in six innings of work while striking out one.
The Lady Lions did a majority of their damage in the first and sixth innings of the opener, as four runs crossed the plate in each of those innings. The highlight of the game came in the bottom of the first inning, where Jarnagin pounded out a grand slam over the center field fence to put FHU ahead in a big way. From there, the Lady Lions had all the momentum, as they cruised to a 10-1 victory for their third straight victory of the season.
It would not take long for the Lady Lions to secure their fourth straight win of the year, as the nightcap proved to be just as effective for the Lady Lions in the 3-0 shutout. Mallory Spurlock (1-0) picked up the win for the Lady Lions in the nightcap, as she worked a complete game and allowed just four hits while striking out four batters in the shutout.
Caitlyn Carter continued her strong play in the nightcap, as she went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases while Hannah Wright went 1-for-2 with a double. Kaylyn Graham rounded out the Lady Lion attack at the plate, as she went 1-for-2 in the game with two RBI in the win.
The Lady Lions pushed one run across in the bottom of the second inning, as Emily Bombard scored off an obstruction call to put FHU up 1-0. Two more runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning with Jarnagin and Malorie Prince coming in to score to put FHU up 3-0. The three-run cushion would be all the Lady Lions needed to secure their fourth straight win of the season.
With the sweep, the Lady Lions remain unbeaten and move to 4-0 on the season. Martin Methodist College falls to 3-3 on the season following the losses.
