BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team picked up a split with Lyon College Tuesday afternoon, as they suffered a 4-2 loss in the opening game before following it up with an 11-8 win in the nightcap.
Makenzie Prince suffered the loss in the opening game after working a complete game and allowing six hits and four earned runs while striking out three batters. Nicole Sanders picked up the win for Lyon College after working seven innings and allowing just four hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
The Scots (19-5, 4-2 AMC) struck first in the opening game, as they pushed across one run in the bottom of the third inning, as Kacy Perkins crossed the plate following an RBI single by Nicole Sanders to put Lyon College up 1-0 early.
The Lady Lions (9-8, 3-1 AMC) battled back in the top of the sixth inning, as Annalise Jarnagin pounded out her third home run of year, this time in the form of a two-run shot to give FHU the 2-1 lead late in the game.
However, despite the late comeback, the Scots were not phased, as they pushed three runs across in the bottom of the seventh inning following a three-run home run by Cheyenne Black to propel the Scots to the 4-2 victory.
However, despite the loss in the opening game, the Lady Lions came ready to play in the nightcap, as they were able to notch an 11-8 victory in the high-scoring series finale.
Mallory Spurlock secured the win for FHU in the nightcap after working a complete game and striking out five batters. Nicole Sanders suffered the loss for the Scots after working 2 and 1/3 innings of relief and allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out one batter.
The Scots jumped out to an early 7-2 lead following the third inning of the nightcap, highlighted by five runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cheyenne Black continued her dominance at the plate for Lyon College, as she belted out another three-run home run to allow the Scots to gain some early separation.
However, despite the early deficit in the game, the Lady Lions battled back and limited the Scots to just one run the remainder of the way while pushing across nine runs of their own in the final three innings to secure the 11-8 win.
The highlight of the nightcap came in the top of the sixth inning, where the Lady Lions pushed five runs across, courtesy of a grand slam by Annalise Jarnagin to give FHU all the momentum late in the game. The grand slam for Jarnagin marked her fourth home run of the season and third grand slam on the year.
With the split, the Lady Lions move to 9-8 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Lyon College moves to 19-5 on the season and 4-2 in AMC play with the Tuesday split.
