PARKVILLE, Mo. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion Softball team continued to roll Thursday afternoon, as they picked up a sweep of Park University with an 8-2 win in the opening game followed by a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.
The Lady Lions (11-8, 5-1 AMC) found plenty of pop at the plate in the opener, as they pounded out 15 hits, led by Caitlyn Carter who went 3-or-5 on the day with a double and an RBI. Four other players recorded multi-hit games for FHU, including Emily Bombard who went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI in the win.
Makenzie Prince (5-4) picked up her fifth win of the season in the opener after working a complete game and allowing just five hits while striking out three. Lexie Duncan suffered the loss for Park University (4-11, 0-2 AMC) after working seven innings and allowing 15 hits and giving up seven earned runs while striking out just two batters.
The opener remained scoreless throughout the first two innings before the Lady Lions broke through with one run in the top of the third inning following an RBI single by Kaylyn Graham to score Carter and put FHU up 1-0.
However, FHU would not be done, as they were able to push three more runs across in the top of the fourth inning. Annaka Baxter crossed the plate first following an RBI single from Gooch to put the Lady Lions up 2-0. Two more runs crossed the plate in the inning, as Emily Bombard connected on a triple to left field to score Gooch and Carter to extend the Lady Lion lead to four runs at the 4-0 mark.
The Pirates rallied with one run each in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, but would not get any closer, as the Lady Lions pushed two more across in the final two innings to take an 8-2 lead, which would be all they needed to secure the win.
The Lady Lions kept the momentum going in the nightcap, as they limited the Pirates to just two runs once again to come away with the 6-2 victory. Mallory Spurlock (5-3) secured the win for FHU in the nightcap, as she worked all seven innings and allowed just six hits while striking out eight batters.
Caitlyn Carter and Freshman Annalise Jarnagin led the Lady Lions at the plate in the nightcap, as each went 3-for-4 in the game with Carter pounding out two of FHU's six RBI in the contest.
The Lady Lions stayed quiet throughout the first four innings of the nightcap, as Park held a 1-0 lead after pushing one run across in the bottom of the second inning. Annali Cleek scored the lone run in the inning for the Pirates following an RBI triple by Lexie Duncan to give Park some early separation.
However, the Lady Lions would not let the early deficit get to them, as they pushed three runs across in the top of the fourth inning and followed it up with one run in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth to take a 6-2 lead, which would be all they needed to complete the sweep.
With the win, the Lady Lions move to 11-8 on the season and 5-1 in conference play. Park University falls to 4-11 on the season and 0-2 in AMC play with the loss.
