Lady Lions Sweep William Woods In Saturday Double Header

FULTON, Mo. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion Softball team continued to find success on the road Saturday afternoon, as they picked up a sweep of William Woods University with a 10-2 victory in the opening game followed by an 8-0 shutout in the nightcap in Fulton, Mo.

Makenzie Prince picked up the win for the Lady Lions in the opener, as she worked five innings and allowed just four hits while fanning four batters. Bre Logan suffered the loss for the Owls (10-12, 3-3 AMC) after working just two innings and allowing three hits and five earned runs while striking out none.

Caitlyn Carter led the Lady Lions at the plate in the opener, as she went 2-for-3 on the day with one scored run. Annalise Jarnagin continued her hot start to the season, as she pounded out her fifth homerun of the season in the win.

The Lady Lions (13-8, 7-1 AMC) started the game hot, as they pushed three runs across in the top of the first inning to take a comfortable 3-0 lead. Caitlyn Carter crossed the plate first for FHU after reaching on an infield hit and scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kaylyn Graham. Annalise Jarnagin would take care of things from there, as she connected on a two-run homerun over the left field fence to provide the three-run cushion.

It would not take long for the Lady Lions to strike again, as they pushed four more runs across in the top of the third inning to extend their lead to seven runs. Annaka Baxter got the scoring drive started with an RBI single up the middle to score Makenzie Prince and Kristen Hunsicker. Jarnagin also crossed the plate in the inning after reaching on a walk and scoring on a misplayed grounder by the Owls. Brittan Jarrell capped off the scoring drive for the Lady Lions in the inning following an RBI single by Emily Bombard to put FHU up 7-0 midway through the game.

The Lady Lions added three more runs to their total in the top of the fifth inning, as Baxter, Lilly Bombard and Abbi Gooch all crossed the plate to extend FHU's lead to eight runs at the 10-2 mark to finish things off in five innings.

The Lady Lions continued to roll in the nightcap, as Mallory Spurlock picked up her sixth win of the season after working a scoreless five innings and allowing just three hits while striking out an impressive nine batters in the 8-0 shutout.

Kaylyn Graham led the Lady Lions at the plate in the nightcap, as she went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Caitlyn Carter and Makenzie Prince also recorded multi-hit games, as each went 2-for-3 on the day in the win.

While Spurlock shut the Owls down at the plate, the Lady Lions exploded with 11 hits, which included three runs in the second and fourth innings to give FHU all the momentum they needed to secure the 8-0 victory.

With the win, the Lady Lions move to 7-1 in conference play. William Woods falls 10-12 on the season and 3-3 in AMC play with the loss.

UP NEXT: The Lady Lions are back in action at home Tuesday, March 20th, as they host a double-header with Blue Mountain (Miss.) College slated for 5:00 PM at Morgan Stadium.
