HENDERSON, Tenn. - The Freed-Hardeman Lady Lion softball team picked up a sweep of Stephens College Friday evening, as they notched a 3-0 shutout in the opening game followed by a 17-0 victory in the nightcap to bring FHU's win streak to nine games.
Makenzie Prince (8-4) picked up her eighth win of the season after working a complete game and allowing just one hit while striking out 10. The Lady Lions needed just six hits and three runs in the opener to secure the win, as four of their six hits came in the bottom of the third inning.
In addition to her impressive play in the circle, Prince was just as solid at the plate, as she pounded out an RBI double to deep left field in the bottom of the third inning to score all three of FHU's runs, which would be all they needed to secure the 3-0 shutout.
The nightcap was just as impressive for the Lady Lions (17-8, 9-1 AMC), as Mallory Spurlock (8-3) worked a perfect five innings, where she allowed no hits, no walks and no runs while striking out nine batters in the 17-0 shutout.
Although Stephens College (0-20, 0-10 AMC) could not get their bats going in the nightcap, the Lady Lions had no trouble, as they pushed across multiple runs in each of the five innings to take care of things in five innings.
Kaylyn Graham and Mallory Spurlock led the Lady Lions at the plate in the nightcap, as each connected on a home run and three RBI in the match-up to account for six of FHU's 17 runs. MattiAnne Sparks also connected on an inside the park home run to deep right field to bring in four more runs to keep things out of reach for the Stars.
With the sweep, the Lady Lions move to 17-8 on the season and 9-1 in conference play. Stephens College falls to 0-20 on the season and 0-10 in AMC play with the loss.
UP NEXT: The Lady Lions are back in action Tuesday, March 27th, as they host a double-header with Cumberland University slated for 12:00 PM at Morgan Stadium. The Lady Lions match-up with Columbia College originally scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled due to unfavorable weather in the forecast. That game has tentatively been rescheduled for April 20th.
